Chapter Eleven, part one.

I had a plan.
And I don't care what you say,
Or what anyone else says,
It’s a good one.
And it's either going to stop the drama,
or Kene's going to beat me senseless.
but either way, I don't care.
As long as all this bullshit stops,
I’m good.

I woke up early on Monday to take care of what I’d been planning since Saturday. I didn't end up visiting Doorstep's church once again, plus he had to take care of family things...it makes me kind of worried since he left on Saturday too. Hopefully things are not too terrible. At least I got to use the out-of-church time to get some things prepared. I’ll admit, I did some things that are a little shady...
Nobody knew what my plan was. All I told them was a time and a place. The time is 8:13 AM, the place was obviously school, Ranceburg Local High. I walked to school instead of riding with Scott because I wanted to get there early. Not wanted, needed. It was mandatory that I be there before anyone else, especially Kene's friends. I had to be a little sneaky with that part, but so far it's worked out. Right now it is 7:53 AM, April 13th of 2009; and for the first time in my life, I’m being literal.

"Hey, Kari," whispered Jimmy. The guys all walked stealthily towards me as I stashed my body behind a wall adjacent to Kene's locker. For once, Tommy was here...he never comes to school. He, Jimmy, Scott and Puppy all were lined up behind me. "What exactly are you going to do?"
"I'm being literal." I sat crouched down with a small pair of binoculars and watched her locker closely. The guys were in the back pondering what on earth I meant.
"Being 'literal?'" Tommy asked me. "I...don't get it."
I looked back at him. "You weren't there...I wouldn't expect you to." I quickly switched back to observant mode. The clock was ticking. It was 8:06, now.
"I have a really bad feeling about this." Jimmy sunk down the wall and sat down.
"As you should, sir." I continued to watch. I could feel my pulse going faster with every minute.
Jimmy looked at me worryingly, so did the rest of the group. "Being literal...'" Scott asked himself.
"Is this like, a prank?" asked Tommy once again.
"Somewhat..." I replied. "I’m not sure what you would call this." I clicked shuffle on my mp3 player.
Puppy shook his head in annoyance. "Can we at least have a hint?"
"I’m going to let the music tell me what hints you get." I clicked shuffle again.
"That'll make things a little interesting," Jimmy laughed.
I nodded. "Hint number one, "there's no point in asking, you'll get no reply. Just remember, don't decide. I've got no reason, it’s all too much. You'll always find us, out to lunch"...I'm Pretty Vacant."
"Um...okay..." Puppy rolled his eyes. "I can't make sense of that. Always with your fucking symbolism..."
"That’s how I roll." its 8:10 now. I’m practically shaking in my boots.
"Something about British people? Or bad music?" Tommy suggested with a smug look on his face.
  "Shut it, jerrycurl.”
"Okay, how about another one." Puppy gets so frustrated with symbolism.
"Fine. Hint number two: 'if you like to gamble, I’ll tell ya' I’m your man. You win some, lose some, it's all the same to me.'"
"Really, Kari? Motorhead?" asked Jimmy with a chuckle. "You’re somethin'."
"You think I’m somethin' now," I laughed. "Oh, just you wait. One more minute...you'll get it."
Everyone crouched down as we watched Kene make her way to her locker, and attempted to open it.
"You broke her locker?" whispered Tommy.
"No," replied Jimmy. "She’s just a dumbass." the group shrugged in agreement.
"Literal...Literal?" Scott was still thinking to himself aloud. Hand under chin and all. Kene stopped a guy in the hallway to open her locker for her and I said a small prayer.
"Guys, these may be my last words." I turned to them briefly. "In the name of Lemmy...'I know I’m born to lose, and gambling’s for fools...'" Kene opened her locker finally and picked up the bag I placed in there. I gulped. And stood up. "'...but that's the way I like it baby, I don't wanna live forever.'"

   "What’s that?" asked Jimmy quickly.
"Oh God, Kari..." Scott gasped. "I figured it out..."
Kene opened the bag... my heart was racing. "What’s in that bag?" Tommy bothered to ask again.
Kene turned around; her face was as red as death.so far, not saying a word. "And don't forget the joker..." I said before I clenched my lips. She threw the bag down the hallway and I bolted off.
"you're dead, Rivera, dead!" she chased after me all the way down 3 hallways and I could hear the guys running close behind, the crowd of people running grew larger over the two minutes we were running. I ran as fast as I could but she had better grip on her shoes than I did and she caught up to me. "I’ve got you this time, Princess!" she grabbed my arm and dragged me down and tried to punch me, but I dodged it and kicked her in the shin and got away, but she got me again. I ripped my arm away, but she grabbed my hair.
The last I remember, is her saying, "Not this time, bitch." with a smile on her face. And the fact that she got me good.

Chapter 10

For the past couple of weeks, you could say that shit has "gone down." and to be honest, it’s about to go down some more. Doorstep pretty much told off Kene, because after he tried to let her down easy, she (who doesn’t take rejection well) said some mean things about me. So, Scott and puppy are pissed at her too. So are Jimmy and Matt, but Jimmy is her cousin and Matt's like her minion or something so she forbade them of "associating with us." it’s like a gang war are something. All because some girl likes some guy. Not to mention that the "problem" she's going nuts over doesn't even exist. What kind of world do we live in?
Today was an awesomely awesome fun-filled Saturday, which was about to turn into an awesomely awesome fun-filled saturnight. me, Scott, D and Puppy spent most of the day at the skatepark, of course I pussed out on the half pope...well it's not really that I pussed out, I just know my life-to-death ration is leaning more towards the death. I also didn't know Doorstep could really skate, like *really* skate, but before a few weeks ago, I didn't really know him all that well. Since that day he ran into me at church, we've hung out every Sunday, same time and place. it's not even really planned, we just do it. This week, or well...tomorrow, I finally plan on visiting his church. Kind of nervous, but I hope it'll be fun. Or, as fun as church can be.
At the moment, Scott and I are having a Pokémon battle via wireless adapter with Pokémon Sapphire, my favorite of the games. Of course, I’m winning. Not only because I have the most bad-ass level 72 Swampert ever, but Scott mostly uses Fire type Pokémon.
"I win." I smiled at him, setting my Gameboy advance in my lap.
"Yeah, yeah...” he rolled his eyes and pouted. I noticed Doorstep had walked off into the distance. I wonder why he left...
Jimmy slid up on his board and looked back and forth at us. "You lost, didn't you...Scottykins."
"How did you know?" Scott pushed him and laughed.
"Because Princess is making her 'I beat Scott at Pokémon face.'" he pointed at me and giggled maniacally. "And I know how you're determined that Fire rules all even though she always uses Water."
He frowned, "you're a meanie," he whined mockingly.
"Hey, Kari!" I heard Leon call out to me, to my surprise. This is the last place I’d expect her to ever be. "What’s up?!"
"Just got done playin' some Pokémon," I said as the confusion ensued. My friends sort of just stood by awkwardly. "How 'bout you?"
"Hanging out with Jack," she swooned. "We're going to get sno-cones then I’m gonna watch him do bmx-ing!" she smiled from ear to ear.
I laughed, "Sounds like fun..." I could hear my friends mocking her language from behind and made a face at them. "We pretty much skated all day, and then we went to Rally's then came back." ..."do bmx-ing?"
"I may join Jack in this 'bmx-ing.'" Scott thought out loud. "I have never seen him ride... it'll be a grand ole' time. I’ll be back." he patted me on the back and rode off to the bowl. Leon sat down next to me on the bench.
"So," I said turning towards her. "I'm kind of surprised to see you here."
   "Huh? Why?"
"Because only lames, losers and delinquents hang out at skate parks...or so you've said." I laughed. Even though it wasn't exactly funny. When she said that I was actually a little bit offended, and we didn't talk for two weeks.
"Oh! Yeah, I changed my mind." she smiled. "It’s sort of awesome here."
I raised my eyebrows; "you don't say." we sat in an awkward silence as Leon stared off into space.
   "We should have a sleepover."
   "Ha-ha, uh, alright."
   "Yea. At your apartment thingy."
"Okay...I guess. We can do it Friday after I get done working, if you want."
   "Working? You have a job?"
"Yes...I’m a janitor for the building I live in. you knew that."
"Oh! Yeah, yeah I remember now." she laughed. "Sorry."
Leon was acting a little weird. I’m not sure what it is, I just know that it’s not normal. And she's never even been to my apartment before, or had any interest in it before now. We haven't even talked outside of school for weeks because she's been completely caught up with Jack...and they're not even going steady. I’m not sure she knows that though...
"Dude..." Scott sat down quickly next to me. "Jack Randel is all broad-hype. He sucks..."
"Oh My God!" Leon gasped, "How can you say that about him? He’s amazing!"
Scott and I glanced at each other. "She doesn't know what broad-hype means, does she," he asked, sarcastically. I shook my head. He shrugged and sat down at the nearest picnic table.
"Your friends are so mean, Kari." Leon pouted.
"Sorry for being so 'mean,' But your friend is not as good at BMX as he, or his groupies, claims to be."
"You don't even know him like I do," she scoffed.
Scott looked over to me with slight disgust, "is she for real?" he shook his head, and got up.
"Hey!" Leon yelled to him, "where are you going?!"
"Over there." he sat down by the big oak tree and lit up a cigar. I felt really awkward now. Puppy, Jimmy and Matt just sort of stood by with their bikes and boards, Leon sat next to me still, with her arms crossed, and jack appeared not to know how to exit the bowl. Either that or he just really likes it in there.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. "I’m on my way to the arcade, u guys should meet me" read the text from Doorstep, who'd been MIA for a while.
I made my way away from the bench of awkwardness and over to Scott. "Hey, Scott..." I pulled my sock full of quarters out from my pocket and dangled it in front of his face as he sat on the ground. "Want to head over to the arcade?"
He looked up at me with his soft blue eyes, full of curiosity. "How much you got in that sock?" he raised an eyebrow.
"$28.75 in all quarters." we exchanged smiles.
"$18.50" he said to me, taking a sock from his pocket as well.
"Dibs on galaxy pinball. Just saying."
"Kari, you're a jerk. A short little jerk." he laughed. "Let’s get outta here."
"Kari!?" Leon called to me as I began walking away, "where are you going?"
"To the arcade with the guys." I replied, and she looked at me like I had a booger or something. "What?"
"Nothing. I just don't get why you always hang out with them..." she flipped her hair. "...so much."
"Because, they're my friends...the same reason you hang out with the people you hang out with." I shrugged. "We have fun."
"No, we have fun. You guys do stupid crap and boring stuff and hurt yourselves."
"Leon..." I sighed. "Just, never mind." I started walking to my bike. I know how Leon is, and I don't feel like arguing.
"no." she ran up and grabbed my arm, "what is it?"
I clenched my lips together and let out a hot breath through my nose before I turned around to her, knowing she's going to regret asking me that. "You are being a hypocrite." I shrugged. "Okay?" I strapped my board to my book bag and turned on my mp3 player to choose a song to ride to.
"Umm, no I’m not?" she crossed her arms. "If anyone's being anything here, it’s you. You’re the one leaving somewhere without inviting your best friend."
"Okay, number one, you're hanging out with someone right now, and number two, you just said we were stupid and boring-"
   "And? You guys are."
You’ve been hanging out with Jack Randel for weeks. He does the same exact things we do." I sat on my bike as I continued to scroll through my playlist.
"No he doesn’t...jack is different than them." her eyes shifted as she pouted at the ground. Scott called me from afar.
"I’ll see you later. I’m holding up the group." I pushed off to ride away.
"You know," she yelled, "if Jack is so much like you guys, why doesn't he hang out with you and your friends, huh?"
"Honestly," I turned back and added, "That’s not my business to tell."
"I think you're just jealous. Stop being a bitch."
"Leon." I put my hand on her shoulder. "Shut the hell up." she rolled her eyes and looked at me angrily. "I will see you later." I rode away for the last time, and I could hear her saying things as I got farther and farther away but I chose not to listen. I guess Scott was right; she really isn't a very good friend. And I was right that boys are her downfall.

~~

"Hey! Where’d you go?" Puppy greeted Doorstep as we got to the arcade. "It’s like you teleported out of the park!
"Sorry," he laughed. "I had a little emergency at home."
"You gotta do what you've gotta do, man."
"So who's up for some 2 player?!" Scott proclaimed in his game show-host voice, pseudo announcing the first activity. Everyone crowded around the racing simulators awaiting the showdown. As soon as the first pair sat down, I already knew Jimmy was going to win. I snuck over the pinball machine before anyone else could take it. I probably play Pinball, Pac-man, the Mortal Kombat game and ski-ball more than any of the other games here. When there was a Sonic game here, that was my all-time favorite. Scott and Jimmy are into racing games, Puppy has mastered the claw machine, Doorstep usually gets himself completely in the zone with the shooting games and Matt...He plays everything; he's just not good at anything. I’m kind of the same way; I’m only good at Mortal Kombat and ski-ball.
"Hey, Kari." doorstep said in his normally quiet and solemn voice as he walked up to me.
"Wad up, gangsta?" I smiled widely as I got into the wormhole once again. 1000 point bonuses make me happy.
He laughed at me, but I don't blame him. "Nothing," he replied with a chuckle. "You still planning on visiting my church tomorrow?"
"Yeah! totally." my ball slipped through the flippers and my game ended. "I’m actually kind of excited about it."
"Sweet, me too. I think you'll really like it. It’s not like normal church."  We exchanged grins and began messing with the claw machine.
"What is it like?" I asked curiously. "I’m actually not sure that I’ve ever been to another church before."
"It’s, different. Like, I don't know how to explain it...we do what you do in normal church, but in a different way. Like we still do sermons and worship music and stuff, but we get the people in the church involved, and use guitars instead of organs and stuff like that."
"That sounds interesting...like a rocker church, or something."
"I guess so," he laughed. "And our youth room has some awesome stuff in it I think you'll like."
"Can you be specific?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Nope. You just gotta see it for yourself...if I tell you everything then there'll be nothing to see."
   "Oh, ok...gotcha." I smiled.
"Slut." I heard an unfortunately familiar voice mutter under their breath. What is with it with girls trying to ruin my day today?
"Will you please go away, already?" Doorstep replied in frustration.
"No." Kene smiled and crossed her arms.
"Kene, you don't even have a reason to be calling people names. I don't like you, and I’m not going to."
"Why? You have no reason not to like me...unless you have a girlfriend." she stepped towards me and pointed at me. "I just saw you ask her out."
"Dude..." I rubbed my hand on my face. "He asked me to visit his church."
"Yeah, seriously. Do you want to come to my church too? I mean really. We all hang out. Why is this all of a sudden a problem for you?"
"Because I like you, asshole. And little-bitch over here isn't following girl code."
"Okay, I’m not doing anything wrong, and even if I was, we're not even really friends in the first place." I shrugged. "And what the hell is girl code?"
Scott and the crew made their way to where we were. Eyes were rolling. "What's going on?" Scott asked us as the group migrated.
"Oh, nothing" Kene said with her usual attitude. "Just whores not knowing when to stop." I just rolled my eyes. I love how she keeps calling me a slut and a whore, since I’ve never even kissed anyone before.
"Talking in third person, are we Ken?" Scott said with a mean look on his face. It was rare, but it was there. Our friends were oo-ing and snickering at his statement.
"Fuck you, faggot!" she yelled in his face.
"Hey, I’m not the one who likes dick in my ass." all of our jaws just drop. now everyone was cracking up...not because it was funny (well, it kind of was) but because no one ever says stuff like that to Kene except for Scott, a.k.a. the only guy who's ever dumped her. She started yelling and trying to hit him but Jimmy and Puppy held her back.
"Guys," said a pissed off cashier. "Take it outside!" Our tiny crowd calmed down and Kene jerked from their grasp, then left.

We all walked out of the arcade, practically segregated. Doorstep, Scott, Puppy and I walked together, and Jimmy, Matt and Kene walked together.
"Is it...'okay' that you talked to her like that?" doorstep asked Scott, who was attempting to light up, despite the wind. "I mean, she's still a girl..."
"No," Scott said after he inhaled. "She’s a bitch."
"This is true...but she's like, still a female..."
"Doorstep, my man," he swung his arm over his shoulder, "there are 7 types of females in this world. There are girls, chicks, women, babes, dykes, bitches and broads." he took another hit of his cigar. "Kene falls into the bitch category...and also the broad category."
"So, because she's a bitch, you can just do whatever you want to her?"
"Hmmmm...No, you can say whatever you want to her, but you can't hit her."
"What if she hits you first?" I asked.
"Then you stop her, but don't hit her. I don't think a dude should ever hit a lady. Not even if it's a ...rabid...squirrel."
"Who hits rabid squirrels?" doorstep was mind-boggled.
    "You get my point..."
"I disagree." I stepped back into the conversation. "I think if a girl hits a guy with the intent to hurt him, he should hit her back." the guys looked at me like I was crazy.
"You don't think guys shouldn't hit girls?" Scott asked, looking almost offended.
"I think it’s wrong for anyone to hit anyone. So think no matter who hits you, you should hit them back. I’d fight a boy if he hit me first just like I’d fight a girl if she hit me first."
"I guess it makes sense...” doorstep rubbed his chin. “I guess..."
    "It’s fair."
"I don't know..." Scott pondered. "I guess you are right in a way, but I would feel terrible if I ever hit a girl."

"So," Kene had walked back up to us, yet again. "I’m just waiting."
I rolled my eyes. "Waiting for what?" I shrugged.
"To give a shit." she grinned.
I just gave her the finger and continued walking home without a word to anyone. I’ll give a shit alright. Just you wait.

Chapter Nine

"Hey, Kari! Whatcha up to?" Leon squealed as she ran up beside me on our way to our the last class of the day, Geophysics.
"Just walking to class, just like you are," i laughed. "Alot of...awkward things happened today."
"I heard! I mean...i read," she winked and pointed at me.
   "You read?"
"Yeah! i feel like such a rebel, i read your blog! I even posted a blog...during school and not during lunch!" She smiled widely. "Bad-assness is filling my veins, Ka-Ka!"
"Please, Leon, Stop calling me that." i sighed with a smile. when she's all giddy like that, you cant help but smile. "I'll have to read this post when we get into class."
"Are we in the computer lab today?"
"Yep, unfortunately...gotta type up those good ol' reports on chemical reactions and shit." i hopped up a little to pop my bag back onto my shoulder. "Good thing i skipped last bell and already typed up mine."
"No fair! My lab partner never does any work." she pouted and blew a strand of hair from her face. "Why didn't you choose me for your lab partner, Kari?"
"I did choose you, but you were blinded by the so-called 'subtle emo hotness' of Jack Randel and chose him."
"i was no— yes i was..." she looked away.
I wrapped my arm around her shoulder. "Yes, yes i know." i shook my head my head as we walked into the room together. as always, there were people making fun of us. most of all, the group at the front that always called us lesbians. as if i could ever date Leon... besides, she's also straight as an arrow.
we waved each other goodbye as we sat next to our partners. Eli and I exchanged smiles as i sat next to him at our table. a couple of minutes later, we walked down to the computer lab. Immediately  after i logged in, i printed out my paper and set it on the computer, leaving a mental note to turn it in after class. "You're already finished?" Eli looked at me with his wide, medium blue eyes; one screamed surprise, the other eye sulked in despair.
"i skipped last bell and got it finished." i looked at him in slight confusion, as Eli is usually the one more prepared. "you alright, dude? you usually have your stuff done."
"yeah, i'm good i guess... honestly, i've been procrastinating all over the place this week and i don't even know why. like, i just got struck lazy or something." his voice cracked when he said "lazy" and i had to try my hardest not to grin.
"well maybe it'll get better, it's probably just a phase." i shrugged and logged onto MyXone. I had done a mobile post earlier, but i liked to look at my blog. i always worked hard on my layouts and they looked cool to me. i'm always really proud when i make a new layout and it looks nice. also, the perfectionist in me is always looking for some imperfection to fix. i try to make mine sort of look like a notebook. I love notebook paper and labelmakers, so i used those looks in my layout to make it a little more "me."
"Hey Kari, there's one thing i wanna know about your blog..." Eli peaked over at my screen with his finger tucked under his chin.
"yeah?" i asked as i clicked around on links.
"what exactly is your background? you know, behind the paper part."
"It's an old, rusty, eroded, metal barrel."
   "how 'grunge' of you."
"why thank you, Eli!" i exclaimed in my inside voice, as if i had any other voice. i also love grunge more than almost any music style, thrash metal is almost tieing with it, then it would be punk rock, then goth rock, then alt-rock.
"the dead flies are a nice touch..." he gave me a smug, little, awkward grin and went back to my his screen. "i just realized i typed 'Matt' instead of 'Mark' again." he sighed. i clicked on his blog link.
"You sure did." i giggled. "Matt and Mark don't even look alike."
"I know...but the M's and the A's...they just mix me up!" we laughed. "ah, i'm not even going to correct it. i'm gonna wait for Matt to see it and get confused."
"that does sound like it would be interesting," i laughed. "nice layout by the way, it's very 'you.'"
"thank ya. it's my first HTML attempt. it's so simple it's insane. i didn't make any tables or anything...because i don't know how."
"i could teach you how, if you want. but your style works for what you did, i like it alot to be honest."
"Kari!" Leon whisper-yelled, "go look at my blog post i did in school!"
"okay!" i whisper yelled back. "Leon said she's feeling rebellious because she posted in school," i rolled my eyes as i turned to Eli.
    "that sounds about right."
I clicked on her blog link, and it was as expected.

oh, Leon... eli and i shook our heads. she had practically written what she told me, but it was humorous. we looked back over at leon (who was obviously monitoring her pageview count) and she was smiling wide with giving us a thumbs-up. that somehow triggered my memory to check Doorstep's blog, since Kene said something about it. i've only read it maybe once, and that was while i was helping him with his layout, which was months ago. i curiously clicked on Kene's first, curious whether or not she posted something about earlier's happenings. and, she did.

I couldn't help but shake my head as i read the short and half-pointless post. Jimmy's always messing with her. He put a child block on her account, so now it censors out certain curse words. It's sort of hilarious going through her blog and seeing all the asterisks.
"who's blog is that?" Eli inquired with a keen look in his eye.
   "My friend, Doorstep."
"i hope his mama didn't give him that name," Eli said in his so called 'prissy-ghetto-gay man' voice while shaking his finger. "mm, mm, mm."
"haha, no...actually, i don't know his real name. he doesn't even have it on his profile."
   "that's...strange."
"yes...it really is." i never noticed that i didn't know his name, and now i'm wondering how he got it. i mean, no one at all calls him by his real name, not even schoolmates did. does he have a real name? i mean, he has to... he's a person like the rest of us.
i smiled quietly as i scrolled down the page. no one ever really mentions me in thier blogs besides my template credits that i ask for, and Leon, occasionaly Scott, and today Cordelia and Kene (indirectly.) Maybe it's just my lucky day...
i saw from my peripheral vison a very uneasy eli looking in my direction.he gave me a nod and directed my eyes towards the doorway, which Kene was leaning against the wall of and giving me a glare, which was interrupted by an administrator who walked passed her in the hallway in which she followed shortly after. "ugh," i grunted. "what is her deal?"
"I don't know," Eli shrugged. "And i don't wanna." Eli went back to his schoolwork as i continued to casually browse.

~~

The bell rang louder than usual at the end of the day. or at least it seemed that way, possibly because i'd been half asleep all of last bell. i went to my locker as usual, then said my goodbyes to Leon, who was actually ignoring me... i guess there's a first time for everything. Just kidding, she does that all the time. She reached to stop me before i got to the doors. "Hey," she said quietly.

I turned around and looked at her. "Hey."
"Guess who's got a date with Jack Randel tonight." Her eyes were glazed over with an unusual shade of blue happiness along with having a huge grin on her face.
I smiled back at her. "Get it, girl." i jokingly punched her on the shoulder as she smiled happily at me, then she turned around and walked as quickly as she could back to his locker. i just continued to walk out the door and proceeded to walk home, waving to the couple of friends i had at school as i left. Now, including Cordi who just waved to me as she rode by in her red Tuscan convertable, which brought a smile to my face. Kene wasn't far behind, practically kicking her bumper off because her piece-of-shit camaro wont start, yet again. i'd feel bad if i smiled, but i did, and now i feel bad.

"hey, Kari," i heard faintly from the direction which seemed to be from my pocket. "hello?" apparently, my hip had answered my cell. My hand zipped to my pocket as fast as it possibly could and after juggling my cell phone for a about ten seconds using one hand, i finally mustered up an (extremely) out of breath greeting.
   "h-hello?"
   "Hey, its Doorstep."
"Oh! Whaddup D?" i nearly tripped on a tree as i walked.
"Nothin' really, i was just gonna ask if you wanted to meet-up so i could give you your bike back."
"Sure man, wanna meet at the bridge? i think that's about half way between us."
"I would, but i'm actually pretty close to you right now."
"Oh, uh, alright...how close? i'm walking towards my house from Ranceburg Local."
"I know, i just saw you," he laughed. "I'mactually in the library, so i just saw you walk past..."
"--Oh! My bad, man, i'll walk back up there."
"Nah, its cool. just hang at the park for a few, i'm gonna check out these books real quick. i'll see you soon."
   "Alrigh, see ya."
"bye," he said right before he clicked off.

I walked maybe three more minutes before i reached the park. there were some kids around, playing frisbee and on the slides, and to my surpsise, the sweings were open for once. so, of course, i got on my favorite one and went to my so-called happy place.
"hey!" i heard a familiar voice say.
"Oh my God!" i nearly flipped out of the swing. "You scared me, Doorstep. What the eff."
"teehee." he smiled. i just shook my head at him.
"you sir, are a wierd dude."
"Well." He scoffed at me sarcastically before he hopped down from his swing. He turned around from where he was standing and gave me the most awkward smile and i couldn't help but laugh. He lit up a ciggarette and offered me one, but i rejected and took out my own. "Hey, i hope you don't mind, i oiled your chain and stuff," he rolled my bike back from the tree he'd leaned it on and i stopped the swing with my foot. "your brakes were a little messed up too, and one of the pedals was kinda broken..."
"Thanks, dude, you totally didn't have to do that...i didn't even really notice anything but the chain. do you want me to pay you or anything?"
"Nah, no way...i have fun fixing stuff. plus, i just borrowed your bike, just accept as sort of a give-back."
"Well," i said, trying to think of a way to justify it, "it was a little slower getting around." i laughed and rolled my bike towards me. "fine, i'll ignore the guilt."
"You don't have to ignore it, you just gave it to me, haha." we laughed and ran our feet through the gravel for a moment. during that moment, i was trying to figure out how to bring up what happened today.
"Um, so... this is probably going to sound like some stupid he-said-she-said shit, but has anyone told you anything today?"
He shook his head and gave a confused half-grin. "uh, no... should i be worried?...or something?"
"Ahh, possibly." i laughed and clasped my hands together. "So, Kene totally almost kicked my ass today."
"What?! Why? What could she possibly have against you?"
"You mean besides the mandatory things she has against everyone?"
   "Well, ha, yeah...pretty much."
"She took me to the girls bathroom, and like, she thinks we're dating, because we went to the buffet together."
"That's like, awkard...we hardly hang out much together, we don't even talk alot! but either way, what's it matter to her?"
"Apparently she likes you. On her blog she said she 'wants to know why i'm trying to take her man' or some shit..."
He sighed and slumped down into a depressing hunch. "ew dude, why...never in my life. and just, i can't even comprehend this. no...no, she does not like me, are you serious? i've never been treated so shitty by another person my whole life?! how is that 'liking somebody.' "
"I don't know, dude. she pushed me, and i punched her, and then she chased me all over school, not even kidding. i hid in some girls locker until the end of the bell. she told me she wanted me to stop talking to you, too." i rolled my eyes, just thinking about it. "it's so stupid, she's not nice to you, or anyone for that matter...i don't even think she counts as a 'friend.'" i shook my head and put out my cigarrette and sat back on the swings.
"don't stop talking to me, fuck Kene." he flicked his cigarrette across the grass. "I hate her, and i think she's  a bitch. and i never call anyone that, not even my own dog, who literally is one."
"...Jimmy told me once that your dogs name is Shitterina, is that true?"
"that...that's besides the point. the point is, i hate Kene.  and finding out she likes me, is the worst thing that's ever happened to me." he laughed. "i'm babbling, but you get the point."
"haha, i guess. i kinda don't want my ass beat though. any suggestions?"
"no clue. might wanna talk to Jimmy or Scott about that one...but i'll talk to Kene tonight and hopefully that'll help. but hey, it's about to rain so we should both probably scat."
"True shit, i didn't even notice."
"Well i'll see you soon, and i'll IM you or something. i'm trying to plan a thing for Puppy, his birthday is in like half a second."
"Sweetness, i'll help with whatever i can."
"Good deal." He smiled, "Take care, chica." he waved to me as he began to walk away, and i rode off on my bike. its sort of wierd hanging out with him one-on-one, he's like the other guys we're friends with, but at the same time he's not...and i don't know what it is. like, his mantra, or aura or whatever you call it. but, he's cool. in a way, he reminds me...of me!
but what to do about Kene...i hope whatever he talks to about works. if it doesn't, i have a feeling school is about to get so much harder than it already is.

well, all i can do is cross my fingers.

i guess.

you know?

Chapter Eight

"stupid piece of crap." i mumbled as i nearly pissed myself getting out of bed to my alarm. i'm sure the guys would have gotten a kick out of it if i had. i got up and got dressed, realizing i did none of my normal preparations for the week yesterday. but i had so much fun with doorstep, that it didn't really matter to me. i could always just do it today. all i have to do right now is pack something quick and make sure i'm down stairs when Scott gets here. i thank God for him some times, school is so far away. i get 3 more hours of sleep now than i used to, that should give you an estimate of how far away it is.
i heard a honk as i was coming down the front stairs, waved to him and got in the car. "good mornin' princess." scott said following a smokey exhale. it smelled so good, he always smoked these apple-flavored cigars in the morning.
"morning." i shut the door and he began to drive. "what is with you guys and that strange nickname?" i laughed.
"makes sense dont it? you're one of 2 girls in our group of friends, and you're the tiniest."
"but kene's there...and you guys new her before me. how come you guys never called her princess?"
"i don't know...i guess because we just don't see her like that. 'cause we all know whether we admit it or not, that kene causes problems, because kene's a fraggen bitch." he laughed. "especially in the morning, so i'm not excited to go to school."
"i'm sorry scotty, don't worry i'll protect you!" i grinned widely.
"haha, that may not be the best idea. i think she's mad at you for some reason."
"i'm not sure how in the world she could be mad at me for somethin', me and her almost never talk."
"i don't know, but i asked her if she needed a ride this morning, she asked if i was getting you, and she said 'whatever i'll pass." like she had a problem. kinda pissed me off because she hung up on me."
"that's kinda wierd...should i talk to her about it or is it too dangerous?"
"i don't really know how dangerous it could be because i don't any damn clue what she's all pissy about. but if you're gonna talk to her, either wait till the afternoon or do it over IM."
"i guess i'll IM her, that seems the safest. but seriously, what could i have possibly done? we don't talk alot but i thought me and kene were cool..."
"i did too." he began parking in his usual spot. "i don't know. kene's just got hella problems. nobody gets her, i definately don't." scott put out his cigar and put the rest back in the case and slid it under the cupholder. we both stepped out of the truck and i saw a head pop up out of the back. Jimmy hopped out of the car and walked with us.
"so what's Kene pissed about?" Jimmy put himself in, his hands dug down in his pockets.
"we don't know yet, but apparently it has to do with me." i said worryingly as i readjusted my messenger bag on my shoulder.
"eh, don't worry about it. it's just Kene."
"yeah, i know, but i hate when people are mad at me..i didn't do anything to her..."
"i'll go with you at lunch to talk to her if ya' wanna. she's my cousin, but i wont let her hurt you if she tries to lash out."
"uh.. alright. i think." i shook my head in disbelief as we walked through the front door. "i'll catch you guys later."
"see ya Kari." they waved at me as i went up the stairs to my locker. it took me 4 tries to get the stupid combo lock open. i always remember my locker combo from last year because they have the same first and last number, but different middle. i always put in the wrong one.
"Gooood Morning Karina-Marina!" my ears rang from the shreaking of Leon's voice into my ears. "How's it goin'!"
"Everything's good for the most part..." i smiled. "Kene's mad at me though and i don't know why."
"but you guys don't even talk. that's a little odd...'ya gonna talk to her about it?"
"yeah, i'm gonna stop by her table at lunch. Jimmy said he'd go with me."
   "Bleck. 'Jimmy.' she mocked."
"You're still mad at all my friends because they weren't crushing on you, i know, i know."
"It's not that anymore, i just wish he would trim his hair. he had the coolest faux-hawk thing and now it's all grown out!"
I smiled. "well that's good to hear, it sucks when your beefee hates all your other friends." i took the folding stool out of my locker and stepped up to get my books. "speaking of looks, what's with the cotton candy-fairy-sparkle look today?
"i felt so glittery!! i went to the 99cent store up the street from my house and found so many cute stuff. like this flower jewelry set and the sparkly eye shadow! i felt like it was a must for today." she smiled and did a little spin. "after i did some work fro my grandma, i went back to the mall and bought that cute little chiffon skirt. it's so twirly." she swooned.
"haha, i see that." we giggled. "well i the bells about to ring, i've gotta get to advisory." i folded my stool and put it back in my locker before i closed it.
"oh shit, same! i don't get why the hell they put my locker on the opposite side of building than where my homeroom is! ugh!" she growled. "well, i'll see you in lab. kisses!" we did our secret hand shake and she closed her locker and ran off.

"Hey Kari." Eli sat down at the desk next to mine and waved. "how was your weekend."
"It was mostly okay, sunday especially turned out better than expected." why are you talking to me?
"Haha, sweet. i heard you saw my friend Mark!  I went up to the mall apparently just a little after you guys left. sorry i let him swipe your screen name, haha."
"It's cool." i laughed. "we weren't exactly friends so i was kind of mad to get a message from him; but it seems like he's really changed."
"you weren't? damn, i didn't know that, he talked about you like you guys were best friends in gradeschool."
"Best friends? Ha! You're kidding right? He bullied me all of elementary school."
"Well shit, i wish i would have known that, i would have never given him your email."
"It's alright. he's really changed now that we're not kids, so we're cool now. it's fist-bump official." i smiled.
"Apparently, he's really afraid of Leon." he tried not to laugh but bursted out. "He said she's been IMing and E-mailing him non-stop since saturday, he even tried hiding offline and she still got to him!" he laughed.
"That sounds a little stalkery. But it sounds like Leon when she likes somebody."
"That's so awkward, she used to do that to me. She still sort of does...it honestly creeps me out but i know that's how she is, i never thought she 'liked' me though."
"Yeah, that's how she is, alright..." i smiled and shook my head.
"Mark's actually texting me about it now." he laughed."haha, i just—he thinks, she's like, nuts." he laughed as he turned his phone around for me to see.
i couldn't help but laugh, but that is a little crazy. "43 messages in 5 minutes? that might be a new record for Leon." i laughed.
"hahaha, here's a new one!" he flipped his phone over again.
we were cracking up. "would you say this would count as legit payback for him bullying you in elementary?"
"hahaha yes!? this is hilarious! i feel bad for him, though, but this is just too funny to me!"

--

i met up with Jimmy when lunch time came; nervous, but only slightly about confronting Kene. i don't have the slightest idea what i could have done to her, and i know that she can be kind of ruthless when she doesn't like someone, minus the kinda. "you ready for this?" jimmy asked me as we walked steadily towards her table.
"i guess so..." we approached from a distance and it felt like an hour to walk the whole 10 feet she was away. she's not so hard to spot, and there she was, Kendura Nakahara, a.k.a. Kene, pronounced "Kenny." She had bright blonde hair with burgundy streaks that had now faded to a pale pink, always spiked out and teased. Asymmetrical haircut and jet back eyebrows like her natural hair. Stitches in one ear from her plug getting torn from her lobe, and she had piercings all up the rest of her ears, she had a thing for colorful jewelry, yet isn't normally caught without black clothes on unless she's naked or at work. she has slanted dark brown eyes, not surprising for an asian girl. she accentuates them with black cat-eye make up and light mauve eyeshadow to match her hair. i never could, but if i could, i would swap her bodies any day. we finally made our way up to her. she was sitting with 2 other people who left as soon as we came up. "Hey Kene."

she rolled her eyes and took a deep bite into her sub. "rut?" she said with a mouth full of salami, lettuce, mustard and peppers. "clant ru se im breatin'?" i could barely understand her through all that food.
"sorry..." me and jimmy looked at eachother as his eyes told me to go ahead. "i heard you were pissed at me...i just wanted to know what i did."
"hah."she swallowed. "as if you don't know. and you're not even going to apologize are ya."
"how can i apologize when i don't know what i did, or if i'm even sorry." i squinted at her in frustration.
"oh." she laughed. "so we're playing that game." she smiled at me before she got up and grabbed my arm, leading me hastily to the girl's restroom. i looked back at Jimmy who marked the catholic prayer over his body and shrugged, looking at me as it my fate was about to be revealed. i wasn't really scared, just a little confused. she pushed me into the stall and locked it. "so you really don't know?" she leaned against the wall and looked at me with a brow raised.
"no, i seriously don't have the slightest idea. we don't even talk, so what could i have possibly done to you..?"
"ilikedoorstep." she said both quickly and quietly as she dug around in her pockets.
"alright, 1, you're always mean as shit to him, and 2, what the hell does that have to do with me?"
   "are you guys together?"
"No?! what the hell." i messed around with my earlobe in frustration. my face scrunched up into an angry, squinty pout; i felt like i looked like a raisin.
"Sounds to me like it. i heard about your little fucking date yesterday."
"Date? you're kidding right? we just ran into eachother and we went to eat."
"i read his blog. looks like you guys had 'so much fun.' what the fuck ever, princess. i bet he paid for you too."
"yeah, he did pay for me." i reached into my pocket and peaked out the few dollars i had. "i'm paying him back today." she rolled her eyes and crossed her arm, shifting the weight of her body onto her left hip. i raised my eyebrow in assurance.
   "yeah, sure. what-the-fuck-ever."
"i don't get it. you pick on him all the time and try so hard to make him mad, just for the sake of pissing off someone." i shook my head. "i don't even think you like him, i think you just want something to be pissed about and cause some problems."
"yeah? and i don't give a fuck what you 'think' shofu." she pushed me and my back hit the stall door. before i knew it i had impulsively pushed her dead in the chin. i swear on the ashes of my dead hamster that there was fire in her eyes and i bolted out of the bathroom.
"What the hell did you do?!" Jimmy exclaimed as he saw me run out with Kene close behind me.
    "She thinks i'm da-"
"Don't you dare say anything!!" Kene yelled from behind me as she nearly grabbed the hood of my sweater. i kicked out my leg and she tripped foreward on her face, exclaming the word "shit" so loud that my ears rang. i ran as quick as i could and bolted through of the lunchroom doors, really wishing the grip on my shoes wasn't so worn down from skating. i saw an open locker and my heart was aflutter. i was saved! i quietly stepped in and lightly latched it shut. I heard her big clunky shoes bounce against the ground as she ran past the locker i was in. she paused slightly before she sped up again. "i will find you Kari, quit fucking hiding!" i sighed in relief and drooped down a little in the locker, frustratingly grabbing my beanie from the hook that had stolen it from me. after about 15 minutes, the bell finally rang and i was all of a sudden set free. a girl opened the door, standing about 5 foot 1 with medium brown skin, yet unpredicably blue eyes and blond hair. she looked just as surprised as i was.
"i hope my bookbag doesn't mind you stealing his spot." she said bluntly with a confused smile on her face.
"ah, um... i'm just gonna go—" i hopped out of her locker and scurried off.
"wait, don't go yet." i looked back at her as she pulled a tiny notebook out of the inner pocket of her jacket and walked up closer.
"what is it? if i broke your baghook i'm really sorry 'cause my hat got stuck and i kind yank—"
"shush" she put a finger over my mouth as she flipped through the pages in her little book. she took away her finger then pulled out a pen and started to write something.
   "i'm really confused."
"Congraaatulations! You have completely #31 on my high school bucket list."
   "...what."
"read here." she pointed to the number 31 on the page and showed it to me. "number 31 out of 50, find a person inside of my locker." she held out the book and pen to me, pointing to a line with her pinky finger. "just sign here."
"hah, uh alright..." i signed my name on the dotted line and she closed her book and put it back in her pocket.
"it was nice doing business with you, Karina Rivera." she shook my hand.
"you too, i guess." i laughed.
"how did you end up inside of my locker anyhow?"
"well.. it's sort of a confusing but really story."
"shall we discuss this over IM?" she handed me a small business card. "we're both about to be late. my SN is on there. i'll t-t-y-s."
"alright, see ya." i read the card as i began walking to class. Cordelia Willows. that's a pretty name.

Chapter Seven

knock knock knock. "Karina, are you ready?" grandma called from outside of my door.
"I'll be out, gimme 2 minutes!" I rushed to find a pair of black spanks and a bolero. I found the red one, perfect! It matched the heart on my skirt.
knock knock knock. "Vamanos, nena, we're gonna be late!"
"Alright! I’m coming!!" I hopped into my boots and kissed my cat on the head, then ran out the door and down the stairs, grandma was honking at me. I hopped into the car and buckled up.

"Good morning, Karina! How has God blessed you lately?" said Pastor Carl, "you look nice today!"
"Thanks, I got a new skirt." I smiled. "I guess you could say having a good weekend is a blessing, mine was fun."
"That's good to hear, I hope things keep getting better for you." he patted me on the back and went to greet some of the other people coming in. it's just like it sounds, I’m at church. It’s not really something I’m into, but I have to go. Part of the agreement of my moving into the apartment. My mom said that I have to work part time at the building, pay my own rent, get to school every day and on time, and go to church every week. I fought to get away from church, but she said I absolutely have to. She says I "need the Lord." I already have the Lord... I just don't need all the people around me in this church.

I skipped Sunday school; there was no use in going there. I made sure I put my phone on silent and I went quietly up to the balcony. It’s got the coolest view. Everyone says don't look down, but what you didn't want to do is look up. The ceiling is like a kaleidoscope of oak wood, and it’s so high up that you get dizzy when you look in the center where all of the rods meet. I always have dreams when I was a kid that Jesus was going to appear right beneath the center point and float down to the church stage and preach to us what really happened. I told my Sunday school teacher once and he laughed at me, that's the incident that had me starting to skip Sunday school, I was only 10. I don't skip every time, just some times, depending on who's there.
I sat up in the balcony by myself; I wasn't called to the board today. I was just trying to listen to the service minding my own. After I got bored, I finally put my headphones in. there's this thing about me, I just can't help. I have to listen to only Christian bands during church...I’m not religious, I don't even life church. I’m nowhere near a model "Christian" or anything like that, but I do believe in God and there's historical evidence that Jesus was in fact a real person, so I believe in him too, but there are a lot of things I will always question. The main thing how was dying for our sins a sacrifice if you can come back from the dead? every time someone would try to argue the reasoning, it just didn't make any sense, then they shunned me and said I thought I was "greater than God." if I thought I was greater than God, wouldn't have I already known the answer? Or the rude remark from my mother, "ask him yourself." I did, and I got no answer. Why on earth do you think I’m asking everyone else for?

I felt something hit my head, I decided to ignore it. I could hear faint snickering behind the low volume of the music in my headphones; it was who it always was. I refer to them as The Clergy Girls. For being the daughters of some of the most important people here, they're more like witches to me than angels. It’s like they follow me. When I sat in the pews, they always tugged at my hair, my family sat so far back that no one noticed, nor would anyone believe me that they were doing this to me. "That was no way for a daughter of the clergy to act, they know better." they always called me a liar, they always got me in trouble and for no reason at all, they never liked me.
We were all friends when we were little, or at least 2 of them were. Alyssa and Alyson. They were sisters and daughters of one of the deacons, as kids, we did a lot together. We sang in the choir, we took dance lessons, played in the playground, and sat at the same table at potlucks. After we started to get older, they started to sort of drift away from me, but I didn't know why. About the time where we had been in the middle of our fifth grade year, more kids had been coming to our church; more families. We elected new deacons and there were more younger couples rather than old men with grown children, these guys had children our age. In my class and grade level, I was one of the very few people that weren't clergy kids, I didn't think it mattered, because they were my friends, but they formed a clique. I felt really left out, and thinking there was nothing wrong with it, I would still go up to Alyssa and Alyson's table to sit during potluck, first they'd ignore me, and then they'd move. During church picnics, they'd make sure to pack the table so that there was no place for me. I didn't think it was on purpose at first, until they started picking on me, that is...
After the Clergy Clique formed, the majority of people my age had parents in the clergy, and they were all friends. One of the new girls made fun of me when I was sitting with them. I remember it really clear because it really caught me off guard. First, as we walked through the line, she had something to say about everything I picked up. She would say where all the fat was going or say how many carbs were in everything I ate. I didn't really care, its food. I got root beer to drink and she said "only poor girls like root beer." I just sort of shrugged it off, because Alysson and Alyssa aren't poor and they like root beer, but they were laughing at her joke...I thought it was odd, then they both poured ice tea just like she did. Although, I know they both hate tea. While we were eating, the new girl, Ashley, continued to be the life of the party, telling all about her life as a middle-schooler and they all thought she was so cool. I had older friends, so none of it was really new news to me, plus everything she said made her sound so snobby, and she had this mean fake sounding laugh. My younger sister stopped by my table and offered me the rest of her mashed potatoes and pasta because she felt bad to waste the food; I gladly took it and started to eat.  "Are you sure you want to eat all that?" she asked me and I said of course, why wouldn't I? Its food, I was still hungry and I didn't want her to waste it either. Alysson told her that i'd probably just go to the bathroom afterwards, which what harm could that say. I always went to pee after I eat. She laughed and said "oh, so she's one of those girls. I’d expect it." I had no clue what she meant by that. She whispered to me: "it's okay little one, i'd puke if my ass was that big too." and everyone laughed at me. My jaw dropped, partially because she just whisper-cussed in church. Bulimic? Me? I couldn't believe my ears. And my own friends laughed at me. That’s not a laughing matter, and it wasn't even true. And now for the past 4 years it's been a recurring joke. Obviously, that was the last time I sat with them at any functions.
They left me alone for about a month, then they started sitting behind me and my family at church. They’d pull my hair and stab me with the little pencils you get in the pew for writing on the Offering envelopes. One of those times, Ashley cut me on the neck with an offering envelope and I yelped in church. Everyone looked at me and the pastor asked if there was something wrong from the microphone, I simply shook my head. I touched my neck and I was bleeding a little and it stung. I asked her why she would do that to me and that it was embarrassing. She said "go cry about it emo girl." and they snickered behind me. I told my grandma and she didn't believe me, I wish her hearing wasn't so bad or she would've heard it for herself.  No one I told would believe me.
I found refuge in joining the Tech Crew. I got to sit in the balcony, where the Clergy Girls never were. I got to learn how to use a sound mixer, make slideshows on a computer and a lighting board. I was really excited because it was partially helping me to learn something I dreamed of, being a Techie for big time concerts. It worked for a while, until they found out where I was.
On special days, like the Christmas Cantata or special presentations, there are things that the sound guy has to do that I can't yet, so he says I don't have to. He said I can still sit up here during the days I’m not doing the board, so I sit in the pews beside the sound area. The Clergy Girls didn't notice until they were singing in choir one day in the upper row, and one of them noticed me.
I felt the little tap on me again, and another. They were throwing communion bread at me. I know better than to throw it back. Partially because I don't want to, and partially because I know they'll put all the blame on me and play the victim. "Can you please stop" I whispered to them. "If one of those pieces goes over the edge and land on somebody you'll get in trouble."
"We’ll just say you did it then." Ashley said in a mocking voice.
"And that you're a messy eater." Alysson teased, pointing at all of the bread on the ground they'd thrown.
"That’s not my mess...you guys are the ones throwing it at me."
"Now, do I look like the type of girl to throw the body of Christ all over the ground?" they giggled quietly.
"Well you did say that Jesus was probably hot..." Alyssa winked at her.
"Oh shush, you." they snickered together. I rolled my eyes and went back to minding my own business... "Aren’t you going to clean up your mess, little Karina?"
"It isn't mine, it's yours...you're throwing it everywhere." I felt the warm splash on my face and my eyes started to burn. It smelled like grape juice, makes sense with communion. It really hurt and I was trying to get it out of my eyes. I got up to go to the bathroom.
"Eat it." I gasped as Ashley pulled me down to the ground. "Eat the body of Christ."
"No... That’s not how it works... get off of me." I tried my hardest to be quiet; I wouldn't want anyone to notice.
"But you need Jesus, Karina. Eat it. Now."
"No." I started to quietly get up but she grabbed my hair, I kept my mouth shut.
"I don't think you understood what I was saying, I guess you're still not used to hearing things out of your native language." she grabbed my hair and started quietly pushing my face into the pile of bread on the floor. In communion you eat unleavened bread. We use matzo, which is basically a cracker. It hurt. "You need Jesus, you little Mexican whore."
"I’m not a whore and I’m not even Mexican. Get off me, I don't want to do this." she rubbed my face in it and giggled. "Please just stop it." my voice was muffled by the carpet.
The music started, which meant it was time for them to walk down to the choir loft to sing. "You’ve been saved by the Grace of God. Be thankful." she rubbed my face down against the carpet and walked off, a couple of the girls purposely stepped on my hand. I sat up and brushed myself off and went back to listening to music. As soon as the music was done, I crept off to the back lot of the church and sat on the swings in the playground.
I heard the chains rattle and I jumped. "Hey, Kari."
"Doorstep?" my eyebrows twisted in confusion "hey... I-I honestly never imagined you to step foot anywhere near a church."
"A lot of people say that, but I actually go to the church up the street."
"Really? So you're Baptist...obviously, so am I." we laughed. "Why aren't you there now?"
"I only go to Sunday school. Our tech guy records the sermons and put them online as downloadable podcasts, so listen to them at night."
"That sounds pretty cool. I normally do the tech board at this church, I’m learning how."
"Sweet, most people have to go to college for stuff like that. And I know you wanna work at concerts one day."
   "Ha-ha yeah, it's good preparation I think."
"Whoa, what happened to your face?"
I guess i'd turned my head not realizing I had a mixture of rug burn and cracker-cuts all over. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you." I shook my head and starting pushing myself on the swing.
"Well I don't believe you would lie to me."
"I don't know... none of our friends know. I’ve been too scared to tell because they're so protective of me, especially Scott...”
"Pinky promise, I won’t tell anyone." he held out his pinky to me and I looked at it skeptically.
"Isn’t that little kid stuff?" I giggled.
"Hey, I take the pinky promise seriously."
"Uhm..." he held it closer to me.” Fine." I linked pinkies with him. "The daughters of the clergy pick on me. Like, hardcore pick on me."
"What do they do? It looks like they were trying to sacrifice your head."
"They were throwing communion bread at me, which is like, hard crackers and they were in a pile. They splashed grape juice in my eyes and pushed my head into the pile telling me to eat it because 'I need Jesus.' it's ridiculous...and it just keeps getting worse."
"Nobody noticed? How did no one see that happen?"
"I was sitting in the balcony, they were whispering and I didn't yell for help or anything, so I guess no one heard anything."
"And you can't tell anybody about it."
"No, I can, and I have; it's just that no one believes me."
"You can come to my church if you want. You don't deserve that sh—crap from people like that." he cleared his throat. “My bad."
"I don't care if you cuss...never bothered me."
"I just don't feel right cussing on church grounds."
"I know what you mean; I only listen to Christian music on Sundays."
"Sweet, I don't know a lot of good Christian bands, so I just listen to my normal stuff."
"If you want I can email you a list of some of my favorites, I know we like a lot of the same music."
"Sounds good." he smiled, realizing our pinkies were still linked and awkwardly let go slowly. I smiled back. "You should ask your grandma though, if you can visit my church."
"I will, I hope she lets me. I’m sick of the way they treat me."
"Well the agreement was that you just had to go, right? Well it’s up the street; you can see it from here. She wont have to drive anywhere crazy and I can meet you here to walk with you and show you around."
I smiled "that sounds awesome. I think I’ll ask her tonight." the church bells started to ring. "Church is about over now..."
    "Do you have to go?"
"Not necessarily...I walk home from church because I don't like going out to eat."
"You don't? You’re the only person I know that doesn't like going out to eat."
"Well it's not like I hate it hate it, I just don't like the places my family chooses to go...plus I like to cook."
"Oh, ha ha. I know what you mean. I don't really like my parent's choice of food either." he looked down at the ground and pulled his lips in. "but hey, do you want to go somewhere that you'll actually like?"
"I don't have any money with me... but thank you."
"It’s cool princess, I can pay for you."
"Ah stop calling me that!" I shut my eyes tight.
"Sorry, Kari, it's a habit." he laughed. "Well do you want to?"
   "I...I don't know."
He shook his head. "Come on."
We walked a couple of miles talking about random things together and kicking an old soda can across the ground. Leave it to me to accidentally kick it out in the street. Our toy was gone. We both frowned and replaced it with a rock. Sorry Mr. Sodacan...we'll never forget you.

i stopped abruptly when i noticed he'd stopped. "Here it is." he said. i looked up at the sign which read WASHOKU HOUSE.
   "Japanese Cuisine House?"
"Is that what it means? i don't know jack-crap about that language besides how to say thank you to Mr.Roboto...if that is his real name."
i tried not to but i started laughing really hard. "Doorstep, You're retarded."
"Yes, yes i am." he smiled at me and we walked in together. "do you like sushi?"
"Yea, i've only had it a couple of times though."
"It's 5 bucks for all you can eat sushi here, 8 for the full buffet with a habachi chef...you wanna?"
  "yeah i wanna!"
"alright." he smiled and went up to the desk to pay, then came back with reciept and two pairs of chopsticks.
"wow, it's like heaven here." i said as we walked through the rows of food. "there's so many kinds of chicken..."
"dude, i know right? that's the first thing i said when i found this place!" he put a big scoop of teriyaki chicken onto his plate.
"Gosh, i'm like, trippin right now, man. how did you even find this place?"
"it was by accident, really. i was riding the bus home from cincinati and i got dropped off up the street from here, one day i decided to stop in, and i don't remember the last time i'd ate so good."
"sweet, we should get the whole crew up here one day and feast!" i exclaimed through a moutful of stuffed mushrooms.
"haha that would be pretty gnar, hopefully scott'll be up to it."
"why wouldn't he be? scott loves to eat."
"because scotty-boy hates japanese and chinese food. dude's completely grossed out by sushi and sh-stuff."
i giggled at his attempts not to cuss. "i didn't know that actually. it's so funny because big bad scott is so fearless, i never thought something would 'gross' him out." i laughed.
"he'll probably come up here, he'll just eat the wierd chinese pizza and garlic bread and get ice cream."
"all the americany food? aw, that's no fun."
   "well, that's scott for ya."
"i wonder why he never told me that..."
   "dunno. he's probably embarrassed."
"around me? why?" i laughed. "he's practically a brother to me!"
   "you might be blind."
   "huh?"
"i guess i'll just say, insest is illegal. but because you two aren't blood. and...yeah." he suspicially sipped his tea and looked away from me.
i spit out my rootbeer in surprise. after looking at him a couple of seconds i just bursted into hysteric laughter. "scott does NOT like me!" i laughed.
he wiped the soda off of his face. "i'm not lying to ya, i think we all know...it seems like you're the only one who hasn't noticed."
"scott's had girlfriends, there's even a girl he likes now. and don't you think he would have told me? i just can't believe it. there's no way on earth."
"did he tell you who he liked by name?"
"yeah, he likes Renay Spalding at our school, they walk together in the halls and she's a junior."
"i guess...but our whole group knows that you're the one he's always had his eye on."
"i mean, i know Scott really cares about me, but i always thought it was more like a brother...he doesn't try to flirt with me or do wierd stuff like that, and if i talk about someone i have a crush on, he gives me advice and doesn't act jealous or anything like that."
"i think he knows you don't feel the same way, and he's not trying to date you because he knows you'd either say no or think it's all a joke."
"well yeah.. i would...like, thats' just crazy talk. it would just be so wierd...we're not supposed to be together."
"that's how it ended with my last girlfriend" he sighed.
"i never knew you even had one, D."
"i did, for about 4 months, about 2 months ago. she was expecting me to be like every other guy and i wasn't, and she left."
"but...isn't that the opposite? i thought every girl wanted a guy who wasn't like all the rest?"
"you'd think so... i thought so... but she wanted, "things" that i didn't want. i guess." he finished his tea.
"oh.. i really did think every guy wanted that after a while.."
"i probably will when i'm older...but i'm not gonna want stuff like that with just anyone. right now, i'm not interested in it at all."
"i know how you feel...i've never really been interested in that stuff." i gulped and mumbled. "i've never even kissed anybody."
"me either." he held out his pinky to me. "your secret's safe with me, princess."
we linked pinkies before he walked with me home, then i let him borrow my bike to get to his house. he said he'd bring it back tomorrow.
